It is difficult to diagnose the depth and area of a burn. A burn is classified into three zones:a zone of coagulation, a zone of stasis, and a zone of hyperemia. The zone of stasis requires management to maintain viability and to prevent necrosis. Burns induce a systemic inflammatory response and increase vascular permeability resulting in decreased intravascular volume with oliguria which is referred to as “burn shock.” Fluid resuscitation for burn shock leads to systemic edema. The role of the glycocalyx in vascular endothelial cells is important in the mechanism of edema formation. Further research is expected to reduce the incidence of edema in the future, including the development of therapies focused on protection of the glycocalyx.
