ICU nurses provide comprehensive patient care both in and out of the ICU in collaboration with multiple professionals, with the aim of preserving life and the return to daily activities of critically ill patients. Comprehensive care for critically ill patients is not always implemented, even if supported by excellent evidence, and whether or not care is implemented is influenced by the condition of patient and the healthcare team. Nurses facilitate the delivery of appropriate interprofessional care by coordinating care, for example understanding whether optimal care is being delivered to patients, facilitating information sharing among interprofessional teams if necessary and facilitating joint decision-making by the interprofessional team. Nurses are also the driving force behind expanding interprofessional collaboration beyond the ICU to support patient recovery in general wards and outpatient clinics, now that the long-term functional impairment due to PICS is evident.
