The use of life support devices in the ICU is supported by ICU lifelines such as electricity, medical gas (oxygen, compressed air, suction) and water. The type of disaster response varies depending on the type of disaster. However, it is necessary to prepare a business continuity plan and an emergency response plan in advance to establish new departments, expand the number of beds, and maintain ICU lifelines. In this advance planning, we need to know what standards and limitations exist for ICUs in Japan. Proficiency in dealing with a disaster through training according to a plan is essential. Clinical engineers should be involved at every level in planning for the use of medical devices and ICU lifelines in their facilities, and should be actively involved in the training of personnel who are proficient in planning.
