災害時におけるICU看護師の役割は「災害により生命危機状態に陥り，機械や薬剤による補助を受けながら治療を受けている患者の生命を多職種と協働しながら守り，その状況でQOLを意識した援助を行うこと」と言えよう。災害時，多数の重症患者が来院されることが考えられる。また災害の慢性期や状況安定化により手術が可能になれば，手術患者の周術期管理もICUで管理されるため，ICUの役割は重要である。役割を果たすためにも，そこで従事するICU看護師の存在は重要となる。特に，病床を拡張された場合は，ICU以外の看護スタッフの支援が必要になる。ICU看護師はサポートスタッフの指導や教育をしながら看護活動も行う必要がある。またICU看護師自身も被災者であるため，精神的サポートが必要となる。
