ASV (adaptive support ventilation) is a closed-loop ventilation mode which automatically provides a tidal volume and respiratory rate to deliver a set target of minute volume with minimal work of breathing on a breath-by-breath basis. Although ASV is a type of volume support ventilation mode or pressure regulated volume control mode, ASV is different in that minute volume, not tidal volume, is the target parameter. By continuous measurement of the expiratory time constant, ASV automatically adjusts inspiratory and expiratory times. Therefore, ASV can be used for patients with or without spontaneous breathing, from the acute phase through the ventilator-liberation phase, which may reduce respiratory workload, and therefore, the time needed for liberation. INTELLiVent-ASV is a full closed-loop ventilation mode to control ventilation and oxygenation for patients with or without spontaneous breathing. INTELLiVent-ASV automatically adjusts minute volume based on the target range of end tidal CO2 and adjusts the fraction of inspired oxygen and positive end-expiratory pressure based on the target range of arterial oxygen saturation.
