Japanese nursing research on empathy was critically reviewed by this study and its trends and issues were examined. Research on empathy for the past 15 years, from 1988 to 2002, were obtained from the data base of J-Med and the latest nursing index.

It was found that major issues of Japanese nursing research on empathy were about the nature of empathy among nurses and the educational methods and effect of empathy. Most of these studies were found to be based on concepts and methods of psychology or psychoanalytic studies. There was no consistency among the results of these studies. Some American and European studies on empathy in the early 90's were also pointed out as having the same kind of phenomenon.

In clinical nursing, meanwhile, researchers started thinking that empathy was not the final goal for nursing but rather a process to provide nursing care based on the understanding of patients by empathy was becoming a critical issue. This was an important movement for nursing, because it helped clarify empathy from the nursing perspective.

Future research topics were also identified. Further experimental study and concept analysis about empathy from the nursing perspective is necessary, and structure analysis based on these studies is critical.
