SKIN

 Tobin1)describes the skin as the body's largest organ, located at the interface between the external and internal environments, and strategically placed to provide not only a barrier against a range of noxious stressors but also to act as the periphery's 'sensing' system. In his review he states that recent developments suggest that this organ is much more critical to maintaining body homeostasis than previously thought. We physiotherapists have not been paying enough attention to skin;our largest sensory organ system. We are educated in anatomy and function, taught how to manipulate and palpate through the skin, to treat adhered scars and to massage muscle for relaxation or pain relief. However, we do not learn everything that is of relevance. A number of important skin properties are listed below.
