  • Abstract

Introduction―Although measurement of clottable protein is the most direct method for estimating fibrinogen, it may be cumbersome for routine use. Other techniques include turbidimetric methods based on salt fractionation *2 or the action of thrombin and calcium, thrombin clotting times *3 and immunodiffusion assays.

After limited *4 trials of several other methods, we selected the turbidimetric technique of Ellis and Stransky for further study, because of its apparent accuracy and convenience. This report summarizes our investigation with this method, standardized by quantitation of the clottable protein of a plasma pool. Fibrinogen levels in two different populations were studied.
