  • Abstract

Introduction―During recent years the volume and variety of tests performed in the clinical laboratory have grown dramatically. With the advent of automated analytical devices and the emergence of the dedicated laboratory computer, one might *1 assume that consistently high levels of accuracy and precision would *1 result; yet *2 unacceptable levels of laboratory error are ever *3 present. Numerous studies estimate that error occurs in one to three per cent of test results. Greater awareness of sources *4 contributing to error combined with constant vigilance and improved computer technology can do much to improve laboratory reliability.
