Streptococcus pneumoniae is not merely the normal upper respiratory flora, but one of the respiratory tract pathogens including otitis media and sinusitis in pediatrics. S. pneumoniae is one of the major causes of sepsis or bacterial meningitis after infancy as well. In Japan, PRSP (penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae) has been dramatically increasing since the 1990s and it is getting harder to eliminate the invasive infections. Nowadays, PRSP is not a big problem except in cases of bacterial meningitis, but there is no doubt that inappropriate usage of antibiotics will lead to high resistance among the pathogens. It is more important to prevent further increases of resistance.
