これまでのESBL産生肺炎桿菌や大腸菌，MBL単独産生Gram陰性桿菌，多剤耐性緑膿菌などに加え，最近では，新たにNDM-1産生肺炎桿菌，多剤耐性Acinetobacter，OXA-48やKPC-型カルバペネマーゼを産生する肺炎桿菌，第三世代セファロスポリンとフルオロキノロンに同時に耐性を獲得した大腸菌などの多種多様な多剤耐性Gram陰性桿菌が出現し，世界各地に拡散しつつある．これらの多剤耐性菌による感染症に対しては，有効性が期待できる抗菌薬が極めて限られており，また，新しい抗菌薬の開発も滞っているため，それらの早期検出と有効な対策の実施によりさらなる伝播を阻止することが急務となっている．

Various kinds of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli such as NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter, OXA-48 or KPC-type carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae, and oxyimino cephalosporin/fruoroquinolone resistant Escherichia coli have emerged and spread worldwide, together with ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae and E. coli, MBL-producing Gram-negative rods, and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.　Since antimicrobial agents effective for these multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacilli are very limited and only a few new drugs are under development, we should block their further global spread by identifying them early and performing efficacious infection control measures.
