Infectious diseases caused by multidrug-resistant organisms, such as methicillin-resistant staphylococci, penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter spp., and oxyimino-cepharosporins resistant Enterobacteriaceae, are serious problems in the clinical field, because only a limited number of antibiotics are available as effective therapy. Detection of multidrug-resistant bacteria is very important to control the spread of these organisms in hospitals. Unfortunately, breakpoints or interpretive criteria by bodies such as the CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute) are constantly changing. For clinical technologists in the microbiological laboratory, detection of multidrug-resistant organisms is critical but complicated. In this review, I will try to explain how to detect multidrug-resistant organisms in the clinical laboratory using CLSI documents (M100-S22).
