Adipocytes express lipoprotein receptors such as VLDL receptor, scavenger receptor class A, SR-BI, CD36, and LOX-1. Adipocytes also secrete bioactive substances, namely "adipocytokines". Patients with metabolic syndrome are associated with a variety of abnormalities in adipocytokine regulation. Plasma adiponectin levels are positively correlated with serum HDL-cholesterol concentrations. Adiponectin enhances the hepatic synthesis of HDL and apolipoprotein A-I-mediated cholesterol efflux, thus accelerating reverse cholesterol transport. In contrast, plasma adiponectin levels are negatively correlated with serum triglyceride concentrations. Adiponectin attenuates the hepatic synthesis and secretion of VLDL. This review will briefly summarize the relationship between adipocytes and lipoprotein metabolism as well as the effect of adiponectin on lipoprotein metabolism.
