近年の幹細胞研究やゲノム研究の進歩により，白血病幹細胞の正体が次第に明らかとなってきた．白血病幹細胞は正常造血幹細胞に類似した表現型をもち，極めてよく似た分子メカニズムにより自己複製などの幹細胞機能が維持されている．しかしながら白血病幹細胞特異的な治療を開発するため，正常造血幹細胞と白血病幹細胞の細胞表面マーカーやシグナル伝達機構のわずかな違いを見いだし，モノクローナル抗体や低分子化合物による治療につなげようとする試みが行われている．

Recent advancement of stem cell biology and genome research has revealed the precise nature of leukemic stem cells.　They share many features with normal hematopoietic stem cells in surface phenotypes and in the molecular mechanisms of self-renewal.　Efforts are in progress to identify any slightest difference of surface markers and intracellular signaling pathways between leukemic stem cells and hematopoietic stem cells in order to develop novel anti-leukemic stem cell therapy to cure the disease.
