E型肝炎はE型肝炎ウイルス(HEV)によって引き起こされる急性E型肝炎である．HEVはエンベロープをもたない一本鎖のポジティブストランドRNAウイルスであり，ヘペウイルス科(Hepeviridae)，ヘペウイルス属(Hepevirus)に分類される．4つの異なる遺伝子型HEVの血清型は同一である．HEVの感染をコントロールするにはワクチンの開発が必須である．現在，DNAワクチンあるいは組換え蛋白ワクチン開発の研究が進んでいるがまだ実用化されていない．

Hepatitis E is an acute viral hepatitis caused by infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV).　HEV is a positive strand RNA virus, is classified into the family Hepeviridae and genus Hepevirus. Based on the available nucleotide sequences, HEV isolates have been divided into five genotypes and all human and mammalian HEV isolates belonging to genotypes 1-4 display a single serotype.　The development of the vaccine is indispensable to control the infection of HEV.　At present, no commercially available vaccines exist for the prevention of hepatitis E.　However, several studies for the development of an effective vaccine against hepatitis E are in progress.
