水痘ワクチンは，本邦で開発された現在使用可能な唯一のヒトヘルペスウイルスに対するワクチンである．本邦では任意接種のため，いまだ接種率が40％程度にとどまっているが，1986年からOka株水痘ワクチンの定期接種化が始まった米国では，すでに接種率が90％を超え顕著な疫学的変化が起きている．水痘患者は激減し，水痘にかかる医療費の著明な削減が報告されている．そのような状況にある米国では，本邦が数年前麻疹で直面したsecondary vaccine failureと同様の問題が，水痘感染において表面化した．それに対する対策として，すでに水痘ワクチンの2回接種が勧められている．

The VZV (Varicella zoster virus) vaccine was developed by a Japanese scientist.　This vaccine is the only one effective vaccine against human herpesviruses worldwide.　The vaccine coverage rate of the VZV vaccine is estimated to be about 40% in Japan.　In contrast, universal vaccination has been carried out since 1986 in USA.　After the introduction of the universal vaccination, remarkable epidemiological change has occurred in VZV infection in USA.　Recently, as breakthrough varicella has become a big problem in USA, 2-time of VZV vaccination has been recommend, similar to MR vaccination in Japan.
