<Cardiac rehabilitation>
Cardiac rehabilitation may begin during the acute stage of the illness as soon as the immediate risk of death or serious complication is small. This may be during the first week after myocardial infarction when the patient's fever and symptoms are controlled, during acute rheumatic fever and before cardiac surgery. The rehabilitation process ends when the patient has made a satisfactory return to employment and his previous way of life. If this is not possible, rehabilitation may end when the patient becomes certain of his limitations and is able to perform meaningful activities within his capacities. Success cannot be claimed until the patient has been followed for at least a year after his rehabilitation. Continuation programs may be offered during that period to prevent recurrences of the acute cardiac condition.
