Parathyroid cysts are relatively rare lesions of the neck and mediastinum. A 30-year-old female presented a mass in her neck, suspected of a thyroid nodule. At the time of operation, the cyst was found in the left lower pole of the thyroid and surrounded by a well-delineated plane of dissection and filled with yellowish serous fluid. It was diagnosed as a parathyroid cyst histopathologically.
Thirty-three cases of parathyroid cysts have been reported in Japan. The mean age of patients is 43.4 years and women predominate 3.86 to 1. Parathyroid cysts are most commonly found in the inferior position, especially on the left side.
It is stressed that the preoperative diagnosis may be confirmed by fluid aspiration examination.
