Respiratory function tests (spirometry, flow-volume curve, airway resistance, closing-volume) and phonatory function tests (pitch and intensity of sound, expiratory flow in phonation, ratio) with PA 500 phonation analyzer were performed on 18 patients, 2 male and 16 female, with vocal cord polyps before and after operation, and the clinical significance of the tests was evaluated. The resultswere as follows : 1) Surgery produced no significant change in the parameters of respiratory function. This suggests that laryngeal stenosis detectable by these tests is absent in cases of vocal cord polyps. 2) Flow-volume curves showed a bronchitic pattern in 4 patients, who concurrently developed an obstructive disease of the small airways. 3) In the phonatory function, the pitch, intensity and ratio were significantly elevated while flow was significantly lowered after operation. The phonatory function tests based on the ventilatory mechanics was useful in the objective assessment of the cases of vocal cord polyp.
