  • Look Inside

Eight cases of acute otitis media were foundin the neonates in our nursery admitted from Oct. 1975 to Aug. 1977 because of prematurity or intestinal abnormalities.

In general, the newborn infants keep their head in a settled position on bed, and in 6 out 8 babies otitis media was observed in the underlying ear. This might be so-called positional otitis media.

Otitis media was developed in epidemic form in few neonates, and this fact suggests that theocurrence of otitis media is due to nosocomial infection.

Bacteriological examination on aural discharge revealed staphylococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from 2 neonates was resistent to cephalosporin, but all neonates were successfully treated with Cephalexin and they recovered from the infection within 4 to 12 days.
