One hundred sixty two cases of unilateral exophthalmos who visited our clinic at the Hiroshima University Medical School from 1965 to 1976 were investigated statistically. Out of these numbers 103 cases 63. 5% were referred to us by other practicing ophthalmologists. One hundredcases or approximately 60% who suffered unilateral exophthalmos were due to lesions of the nose, paranasal sinuses and epipharynx. With the involvement of the paranasal sinus 54 cases were found suffering from cysts ; the frontal sinus appeared to be the most frequent followed by maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses in their turn. Malignant tumors were relatively frequently foundin those over 40 years old. Patients suffering paranasal sinusitis were mostly under 20 years old.

Postoperative recurrence of the cyst which produced exophthalmos was found to be in six or ten years for frontal sinus involvement ; ten years in cases with ethmoidal sinus and about fifteen years in maxillary sinus.
