L-DOPA, which is a precursor of noradrenalin in catecholamine biosynthesis, was administered to the patients suffering from reversible nasal obstruction that proved to be capable of reducing this condition.

The agent was administered orally in doses of 400mg/day during the first week of the treatment, 600mg/day in the second and third weeks and 400 mg/day in the fourth, the last week.

Improvement of the symptoms began to show in 3rd to 7th day of the treatment and continued moderately during the administration. Fair effects were seen in about 70% of the cases but no effect was recognized in the treatment of nasal allergy.

L-DOPA's pharmacological actions on the vasomotor nerve endings in the nasal mucosa was studied by electromicroscope. It revealed a marked increase in the dense cored vesicles in the synapses of vasomotor nerve endings.

Based upon these findings, the authors conclude, that the administration of this agent would effect the increase of small dense cored vesicles in the synapses of the vasomotor nerve endings in the nasal mucosa and decrease the nasal obstruction of the patients.
