  • Look Inside

A case of congenital deafness combined with goiter in a woman, aged 38, diagnosed as Pendred's syndrome is reported. The audiogram of this patient showed a sensoneural horizontal hearing loss over 80 dB. The congenital factor was suspected when one of her sibilings was found to be deaf. The patient had not sought any aid towards her deafness until a few months ago when a physician pointed out her condition of thyroid enlargement in connection with her deafness and advised to seek ENT consultation.

Examination revealed euthyroidism by means thyroid function test. Needle biopsy of the thyroid gland showed simple goiter. The perchlorate administration test revealed a characteristic disturbance of iodine organization.

The incidence of goiter in the Kyoto prefectural School for the Deaf was 4% (9 out of 187 cases). This rate is slightly higher than that among the normal children but, when compared to statistical studies of other countries it shows no great difference.
