For the period of 15 years from 1954 to 1969. The fenestration operation and stapes surgery have been employed for treatment of deafness caused by otosclerosis, conduction deafness and chronic otitis media, at the Otolarygological department of the Okayama University Medical School. The results are summarized as follow:

 1. The fenestration operation was performed upon 93 patients, 120 ears, comprising of conduction deafness, 61 ears; otosclerosis, 43 ears and as a secondary measure in treatment of deafness in chronic otitis media, 16 ears.

 2. The stapes surgery was performed on 19 patients, 21 ears, consisting of conduction deafness, 6 ears; otosclerosis, 8 ears and chronic otitis media, 7 ears.

 3. The operative results on the whole were quite satisfactory.

 4. In this country where otosclerosis is relatively rare in occurrence, the inner ear surgery may well be adapted for the treatment of severe conduction deafness. For this purpose, either, fenestration operation or stapes surgery may be selected to adequately meet the situation.
