  • Look Inside

A study was conducted to investigate the types of bacterial growth that may be found in the aural discharges of the acute, and chronic otitis media and from operated cases. In acute otitis media staphylococci were found in most cases, but in chronic otitis and in operated cases, pseudomonas, proteus and enterobacteriaceae with staphylococci, either in combination or independently.

The acute otitis media is mostly caused by invasion of singular type of bacteria but in chronic otitis and in the operated cases mixed infection was usually the case.

Staphylococci in acute otitis media are usually highly sensitive to many antibiotics. Staphylococci obtained from chronic otitis and operated cases were much less sensitive to any form of antibiotics. This sensitivity appeared to be almost negative in cases of pseudomonas infection.
