Four cases of glossopharyngeal neuralgia are reported with reference to their surgical treatment and pathological findings. The glossopharyngeal nerve was resected after the removal of the palatine tonsil through oropharyngeal approach. The sectioning of the nerve gave a complete relief from further neuralgic attacks.

The removed tonsils of all 4 cases showed chronic inflammation, though there were no particular findings of ASLO titer, CRP and RA tests. In 3 out of 4 cases, the fibers of ninth nerve appeared to be swollen, losing myelin structures. These pathological findings are possibly the cause of the idiopathic glossopharyngeal neuralgia, although in one case it may be due to lesion more centrally located, no pathology was recognized in the resected nerve.

Two cases are found with neuralgia involving the 3rd branch of the trigeminal nerve and in one case there was neuralgia involving the greater auricular nerve.
