Radiographic evaluation of the ability of the tubal cilia of the Eustachian tube to clear the tympanum of tantalum powder which was insufflated into the tympanic cavity through the existing central perforation in patients with chronic otitis media is attempted.

A roentgenogram was taken with the patient in Stenver's and submentovertex positions 1 hour and 3 hours after the insufflation of the tantalum powder. The contrast media was already cleared from the tympanic cavity into the nasopharynx in 5 out of 11 cases in 1 hour and in remaining 6 cases with-in 3 hours.

The advantages of this method are as follows: 1. The technique of this method is rather simple.

 2. No restriction in the position of the patient's head is required.

 3. The results of the test could be evaluated on roentgenograms.

The disadvantages may be counted in that the method is not applicable to all cases of chronic otitis media and that infection of the tympanic cavity resulting from the test could not be disregarded, and that the method is time-consuming.
