  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Three cases of glossopharyngeal neuralgia are reported. The two of these cases were treated by glossopharyngeal neurotomy through cervical approach and the complaint in both cases was completely abated. However, in one a post-operative complication developed with difficult swallowing due to paralysis of the soft palate and other portions of the pharyngeal muscles.

The authors reviewed a number of literatures with discussions on the effects of glossopharyngeal neurotomy on swallowing. It was the consensus of opinion that glossopharyngeal neurotomy alone will not cause swallowing difficulties but it should most likely be relagated to some injury to the pharyngeal portion of the vagus nerve.
