  • Look Inside

Two cases of giant cell tumor of the right temporal bone are reported with review of literature.

Case 1. A woman, aged 31, complained of difficulty of hearing of the right ear, vertigo, tinnitus and pain in the right ear with increasing severity. Examination showed the external auditory meatus to be filled with a dark reddish mass. X-ray revealed a bony destruction in the preauricular region.

A large tumor was surgically removed through preauricular incision. Microscopically, it was shown to be a benign giant cell tumor of the right temporal bone. Eighteen months later, at present, no sign of recurrency is noted.

Case 2. A man, aged 45, complained of tinnitus, slight trismus and pain in the mandibular joint. Examination showed the ear drum as normal but there was a slight swelling on the bony portion of the right external auditory canal superiorly. X-ray showed an extensive bony destruction in the area of the preauricular region. At the operation a darkreddish tumor was removed from this area. The diagnosis of benign giant cell tumor was made by microscopic examination. The patient is fairing quite well in the 6 months followup at present.
