  • Look Inside

A woman, aged 41, complained of an abnormal feeling in the right side of the neck which was aggrevated by feeling of food obstruction in this region after meals. The x-ray examination revealed the presence of an esophageal diverticulum at the level of the first and second dorsal vertebrae. The lesion was successfully removed by an operation.

The situation of the lesion was found to be much lower than that of Zenker's diverticulum, slightly higher than the level of tracheal bifurcation and the body itself was protruded forward.

From the examination of the x-ray picture and the removed specimen the nature of the lesion was believed to be a pressure diverticulum. However, the situation of this lesion differed much from that of the ordinary pressure diverticulum. The etiology in this sense must be stated as unknown. Yet, it is most likely the result of naturally occorring weak spot in the esophagus yielding to the mechanical pressure of swallowing.
