A new surgical technic of meatotympanoplasty, similar to the posterior tympanotomy approach, is described for the restoration of sound conduction.

A thin lamella of cartilage removed from the auricle is used as a tympanic membrane graft which is sufficiently rigid to maintain its position. This new tympanic membrane is reconstructed in its normal position and not medially nor laterally.

The sound vibrations are transmitted from his new tympanic membrane by an autogenous cartilage columella to the intact stapes or the footplate.

In 8 out of 13 cases the air-bone gap was closed to be within 20 dB or better. In 2 out of 13 cases the air-bone gap closed to be within 25 to 30 dB.

In 3 cases where the air-bone was 35 dB or more, it was considered that a revision operation to be desireable.
