The clinical application of gamma-hydroxy-butylic acid (GHBA) for EEG audiometry was investigated in 27 children.

The EEG pattern of GHBA-induced sleep was characterized by being light and/or moderate in effect with only few spindles and K-complexes. The depth of sleep changed to a lighter one when the subject was stimulated by tapping or calling. No significant side-effect was noted during or after sleep if a proper dosage of atropine sulfate was administered along with GH BA. Sixty clear responses to the stimuli of 35 dB (SL) click were obtained in 15 out of the 19 normal youngsters tested. These tests when compared to those taken at the awakened stage showed a larger value of P2 and N2 that made them much easier to be recognized.
