  • Look Inside

Because carotid arteries have the important function of transporting the blood-supply to the brain, they are equiped with well developed collateral circulation.

When the common carotid is completely occluded on one side in a dog under pentobarbital anesthesia, the blood flow in its counterpart on the other side will be increased by 30% while, the corresponding blood pressure will be increased only 10%. The intra-arterial blood pressure on the occluded side decreased to 70 mmHg from the original 120mm which gradually settled to the average of 85mmHg. This increase in the blood flow in the unoccluded side will show no change even when the carotid sinus of the same side is denuded of its nerve supply.

When the common carotid on one side was completely occluded, the blood flow through the vertebral artery on the same side showed an increase of more than twice the usual amount.
