A statistical review of esophageal foreign body cases examined at the Shikoku Central Hospital for the recent 10 years, May, 1959 to June, 1969, is made.
There were a total of 22 cases, but 16 of these were children below the age of 5. The male female ratio was 1.7:1, more prevalent in the males.
Seventy two and eight tenths percent of cases were due to hard-coins; mostly caught at the first esophageal constriction.
In children less than 10 years of age the esophagoscopy is performed under general anesthesia. The foreign bodies that may slip into the intestines are watched with x-ray follow-ups for 3 or 4 days, until anal expulsion is confirmed.
