  • Look Inside

The authors employed bleomycin, a newly developed antineoplastic antibiotic, in treatment of 16 cases of malignant tumor of the head and neck region. The agent appeared to be effective in 75% of cases. And this effectivity was particularly marked in cases of malignancy of the oral cavity such as the tongue and the palate. Microscopically the agent appear to cause a gradual death of the tumor cells. The side-effects were manifested by anorexia, loss of hair, pyrexia and erythema but blood disturbances such as agranulocytosis were seldom met with.

This agent, when used against the epithelial cancer, appeared to be the most effective but, to attain a complete cure of the cancer by its use alone was met with a difficulty; other means should also be supplemented.
