  • Look Inside

The tympanum of a man, aged 27, who complained of loss of hearing due to a history of otitis media which occurred 13 years previously, was examined by Rosen's technique of testing. The cause of the hearing loss was found to be the presence of an adhesive band which bound the manubrium mallei to the posterior wall of the tympanum whereby interfering the free movement of the tympanic membrane. This particular band measured 6mm in length and 0.8mm in thicknss; the anterior one third of its length was composed of hyalinized connnective tissue while the posterior two thirds was that of calcified type. The diagnosis of tympanosclerosis was made. When the band was removed surgically the patient recovered his hearing.
