Five cases of chemical burn of esophagus collected during the period of 10 years are reported. The agents which caused the lesion are found to be due to sodium hydroxide in 2 cases, to potassium carbonate in 2 cases and to ammonium hydroxide in 1. Both cases who swallowed lye for suicidal attempt died from severe esophageal burn and perforation. Cases that imbided potssium carbonate was accidental ; a man, aged 76, mistook it for sake (rice-wine) died but, the boy aged 12, drank it similarly by error, survived. A case who was burned by ammonium hydroxide recovered without any complications.
