Nishihata presents summary observations on 8 cases of petrositis which he had previously rep-orted in detail. As outstanding signs among these cases neuralgia occurred in 3 (orbital, 3 cases; dental, 1 case), headache in 5, and par-esis of the external muscle of the eye in 2. The basis of diagnosis was confirmed at the time of operation in 2 cases; on paresis of the ext-ernal muscle of the eye in 2 cases; on orbital and dental pain in 1 case; on headacha and otorrhea in 1 case; on headache and facal pare-sis in 1 case; and otorrhea and spinal fluid examination in the remaining 1 case. Bacterial agents found involved in the infection were that of streptococcus in 3 cases; that of muco-sus in 2 cases; and unknown in 3 cases. Cell pneumatization was found well developed in 4 cases, while it was poor in the remaining 4. Menigitis developed in 4 cases. Four cases were cured and the other 4 died. As unusual signs the author cites diffuse swelling in and about the wound of operation, which was seen in 2 cases. The report is concluded with detai-led comments on various topics as that of sym-ptoms and signs, diagnosis-and therapy of this idsease.
