Owada presents observations on vertical nystagmus in the experimental animal, the cat, the manifestat on of which was produced by traumatizing vestibular nucleus and its path of conduction. Bechterew's nucleus was found as the deviating point in the direction of the nystagmus. Trauma applied to this conduction path toward the cerebellum from the nucleus caused a point-up nystagmus while that which applied towards periphery away from the nucleus produced a point-down nystagmus. Similar results were obtained by traumatization of the opposite side. It is interesting to note that the balancing factor of two movements up and down in the vertical nystagmus is contained in the one side alone, whereas, with nystagmus otherwise than vertical this balance is maintained by both sides. The question of position and positional nystagmus is also discussed in this paper.
