Interferon Therapy for Brain Tumor Patients

I．はじめに

　2種類のvirusが相前後して，または同時に感染した場合それらのvirusの増殖が相互に抑制されることは干渉現象として古くより知られていたが，これが中和抗体でも，virus粒子そのものでもない液性因子であることをはじめて発見し，virus抑制因子（facteur inhibi-tieur）として報告したのが本邦の長野，小島^9）である．その後Isaacs,Lindenmannら^4）がinterferonと命名してからその名称が広く使用され，当時進歩しつつあった分子生物学を背景に活発に研究されるようになった，そして1960年後半になりinterferon（以下IFNと略す）の持つ多様な生物活性がvirusのみならず腫瘍に対しても増殖抑制効果を示すことが知られて，より一段と注目と期待が集中するようになった．しかしながらIFNの供給面の不足もあって，抗腫瘍効果については基礎的にも臨床的にも充分な効果判定がなされる段階には到っておらず，脳腫瘍に対する効果についてもほとんど不明である^13），今回われわれは9例の悪性脳腫瘍患者に対してヒト白血球interferon（Hu-IFN-α）^3）を単独投与し，その効果について検討した．

Nine cases of recurrent and metastatic brain tumors weretreated by Hu-IFN-α. It was given intramuscularly andsingly to those who finished the usual treatments of surgicalremoval and ⁶⁰Co irradiation more than 6 months before, toexclude their effects on tumors. They were divided into 2groups of small dosage (fifty thousands units weekly) andlarge dosage (3 million units every other day). The totaldosage of IFN varied from about 2 million units for thesmall dosage group to 264 million units for the large dosagegroup. No side effects were noted.
