Ⅰ．はじめに
中枢神経腫瘍の病理組織学的診断は，脳神経外科医にとって，その治療方針を定め，予後を推定するためにもっとも重要なものであるが，術中にその腫瘍の種類，悪性度，拡がりなどを速やかに知ることは，手術方針を決定してゆく上に不可欠である．
わが国においてこのような目的のために使用されている術中迅速診断法は，凍結切片によるのが一般的であろう．凍結標本作製にはかなり時間を要するし，標本がごく小さく，非常に軟かく，壊れやすかったり，壊死組織や，血液中に混じているような場合は作製が困難である．ここでのべる塗抹標本はわずか数分間ででき，手技もやさしい．
The smear method for rapid diagnosis of tumors of the central nervous system at operation is not popular in this country, although this has been widely used in North America and Europe since 1930s.
During the period from 1958 to 1976 we experienced 1447 histologically verified tumors of the central nervous system.
