  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Neurophysiological investigations on C-and Aδ-fibers in the brain stem reticular formation have been initiated by Collins and others in the 1950's and the 1960's. It is considered that perception of noxious stimuli including "pain sensation" has little to do with old, classical "lateral spinothalamic tract" above the level of the medulla oblongata. Substantial evidence has been accumulated in regard to the significance of the brain stem reticular formation modulating afferent noxious inflow to the medial reticular core.
