Neurological sequelae and damage to the developing brain caused by viral infection in the neonate and infant were reviewed. The most important neurotropic viruses in the neonatal period in Japan are Herpes simplex virus (HVS) and enterovirus (EV). These were demonstrated by the author's nation-wide epidemiological survey on neonatal viral infections of the central nervous system supported by a grant for maternal and child health research from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan. Among entero viruses echo-11 virus was predominant.

In recent years the prognosis of neonatal aseptic meningitis has gained attention since Sells et al17). The diagnosis of aseptic meningitis is difficult because of absence of meningeal signs and nonspecific symptoms in this age group, and the results of viral examinations are often retrospective. Therefore meningitis should always be suspected when any abnormal signs develop in the newborn, and if con-vulsions or cloudy consciousness are seen, encephalitis should also be considered.
