  • Look Inside

Intracerebrally implanted grafts of neural tissues have been reported to promote functional recovery in brain-damaged host animals. However, it is still not clear how such implants exert their functional effects. Nonspecific diffuse release of active substances may be enough to restore defective functions or to provide trophic survival and regeneration of damaged host neurons. On the other hand, there is morphological evidence suggesting that grafted fetal neurons can establish efferent synaptic connections with the host brain and become at least partially integrated into the host neuronal circuitry.
