  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The regulation of food intake is a complex process. Appropriate regulation of food intake utilizes, a variety of signals that are generated by deviation of the energy and nutrient levels from the homeostatic state of the organism, sensory signals transmitted from the visual, olfactory and gustatory systems in response to food, neural and hormonal signals from visceral organs including the gastrointestinal tract, light-dark signals that entrain circadian feeding rhythm, and others. Psychological, ecological and sociological factors also affect food intake.
