  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Scrapie is a naturally occurring fatal, subacute and progressive encephalopathy in sheep and goats, and has been known over 200 years ago in Western Europe as serious problems among sheep owners.

The disease is able to be transmitted experimentally not only to natural hosts, but also to various animals including rodentia, canivora and primates. Mouse and hamster are most widely used as experimental animals. Histological lesions, mainly consitsing of vacuolation of nerve cells without any inflammatory reaction, locate only in central nervous system, and closely resemble in any different species of affected animals.
