  • Look Inside

In the mammalian brain, the locus coeruleus (LC), a small nucleus in part of the reticular formation, is composed principally of noradrenergic neurons. Since LC neurons project their axons diffusely to many brain sites with extensive branching, the functions of the LC have been implicated in modulating overall brain activity such as the sleep-waking cycle rather than regulating specific functions. However, an accumulation of evidence suggests the involvement of the LC in more specific functions such as attention, neuronal development and synaptic plasticity. In this review, the role of the LC in attention is discussed on the basis of the activity of LC neurons.
