Abstract

The central nervous system regulates active sodium and potassium transport in rat skeletal muscle during hypokalemia. This regulation is achieved by the apparent release of catecholamines onto muscle following nerve activity. Thiseffect can be prevented by treatment with agents that block the α-adrenoreceptor. 3H-prazosin binding experiment demonstrated the occurrence of two different kinds of α-1 adrenergic receptors on the soleus muscle membranes of hypokalemic rats, but not of normal rats.
