Neurogenesis in vitro

I．緒言

　神経培養の父ともいえるRoss G. Harrison（1907年^40,41），1910年^42））は，カエルの神経管をカエルのリンパ液の中で培養することにより，神経細胞からの神経線維の芽出を観察し，Schwann細胞や結合組織細胞が神経細胞と融合するのではないことを証明した。これはこの当時論争になっていたRamon y Cajalらの主張するニューロン説とCamillo Golgiらの主張する網状説との論争に終止符を打ち，ニューロン説が正しいことが実証されるに至る。このように神経組織培養法は他組織に先がけて開発され，A. Carrel，A. Fischer，G. LeviおよびP. Weiss^125）に継承された。しかし彼らは培養条件下でシナプス形成や髄鞘形成を観察するに至らなかった。

　1950年代に入り，Peterson^92），Peterson and Murray^95）は脊髄神経の培養により，末梢性髄靴形成に成功し，いわゆる近代神経培養法を確立した。Bunge^15）によると1955年までを神経培養法における古典時代，1955年から1968年までを古典時代の延長期，1968年以降を近代神経培養法の時期に区分している。

　Bunge, R.P. has postulated the subdivision of the history of tissue culture ; an early period, (1907-1955), a transitional period (1955-1968) and recent times (1968- ). The early period extended from the work of Harrison through that of Weiss, including contributions by Lewis and Levi.
