  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Three types of sleep apnea have been defined by Gastaut et al. Central apnea is characterized by absence of respiratory function with complete cessation of activity in both intercostal and diaphragmatic muscles. In obstructive (or upper airway) apnca, airflow through nostril and mouth is absent despite persistent respiratory effort. Mixed apnea is a combination of central apnea and obstructive respiratory apnea.

Our experiences suggest that there might be two types of central apnea.
